Denise Austin: Burn Fat Fast Latin Dance ****** After my failed attempt with a Zumba DVD I was slightly skeptical about this dance workout, but decided what the hell, let’s live dangerously and give it a try. I am so glad I did, because it’s probably the most fun workout DVD I own in my rather extensive collection and a rare gem in the world of more or less torturous training routines, one that actually does not have me looking at it with resentment every time I have to exercise. And I exercise pretty much every day, so as you can imagine there can be a lot of antagonistic sensations building up there!  This DVD has 2 parts, namely the Dance Workout (30 min.) and the Bonus Toning Workout (10min.) You are given the option to do this with Denise’s instruction or with music only. The chosen tracks are inspired by Latin rhythms and fit into the whole concept very well. Ms. Austin can be extremely chatty and I know some people don’t like that, but her upbeat, high energy vibe goes perfectly with this particular workout, even all the little cries of encouragement (whooo, yeah,  etc.) she utters make a very endearing impression. She also provides excellent cues with good timing, which make learning the routines a breeze: the exercises really are kind of self-explanatory anyway.  The girls in the background are very attractive and a pleasure to watch, an example of gracefulness I strive to reproduce as I futilely attempt to match the elegance of their motions. The dance segment starts with a good warm-up, already introducing the moves that are going to be used later on. The main part contains 4 sections, which integrate steps from Samba, Mambo, Cha-Cha, Salsa and Hip-Hop. Those are repeated several times in every routine and each segment ends with a short burst of high-intensity activity, which Denise calls “dance jam”. The steps are really simple to learn: admittedly I am not always the most coordinated of people, but found them quite easy to follow during the first run already. This workout can get rather vigorous at times, but if you are a beginner you can just tone down the intensity of the individual exercises and you should still be able to do them. The moves featured here enchanted me with their fluidity and grace and the routines turned out to be surprisingly sexy. Very likely you would even be able to use some of the steps when you go out dancing. This regime also appears to be greatly effective for the waistline, I could definitely feel it working doing all those twists! The short toning section contains exercises sculpting your upper regions using weights, while simultaneously engaging the lower body, as well. The exercises are easy-going and straightforward, but if you use heavy enough dumbbells you’ll still feel them in your muscles. To sum up: if you are looking for a hardcore training that will get you buns and abs of steel this is probably not it. Even though I did sweat quite a bit working out with this DVD, I have to honestly admit it’s more suitable for lighter days (at least if you are intermediate or advanced, would likely be challenging enough for a complete beginner). This workout is, however, extremely awesome fun! Especially one “posing” routine entertained me so much, my squeals of amusement  had my Darling rather intrigued and mystified as to the nature of my fitness endeavors. He was discreetly peeking into my training temple, trying to figure out why he is not hearing the normal sounds usually accompanying my workouts, namely deep grunts, whimpers of pain and passionate bouts of cursing. Sailors would be proud is all I will say at this point. Probably my only complaint would be that the product might have benefited from an additional 10 minutes of Cardio, I would have preferred it to be just a little bit longer. Nevertheless I would still wholeheartedly recommend this DVD:  it’s a great way to add some zest to your fitness routine and learn how to shake that tush like a full-blooded Latina!
