MEZZO BISTRO AND WINE ******      LOCATION: LAS VEGAS Website: http://www.mezzobistro.com/ Mezzo Bistro and Wine is a charming Italian restaurant offering the best of this fascinating country in both the culinary and decorative aspect. The interior is kept very dimly lit and romantic, in fact it was so murky in there that even I, the biggest fan of subdued lighting, found it almost a tad too dark and was wondering if maybe next time I should come equipped with a flash-light to be able to read the menu a little better :-). Definitely a big plus if you are not having a good make-up day though! What would normally appear a bit scary (or like you have learnt the art of beautifying your face at the Clown Academy) will only look intriguing and mysterious here…There are nice white linen tablecloths and candles on the tables, the featured colors include mostly dark brown, cream, white and red. The walls are covered in black and white photographs, prints and posters which even though thematically not coordinated, still provide an interesting vibe of artistic chaos. The tables are placed enough apart from one another that you can have some privacy and do not have to involuntarily include your neighbors in your conversation. Some delightfully tacky details such as a chandelier shaped like a string of chili peppers or fake grape vines only add to the overall cute and cozy ambience of the place. Their menu offers everything one imagines under Italian fare, starting with excellent salads, soups, pizza, pasta as well as meat and fish entrees. The portions are generous and the food served in a very esthetically pleasing way. Out of all the dishes I tried on my several visits there I would heartily recommend the House Salad (a lot more sophisticated and fancy than the few sorry pieces of droopy lettuce and  sad tomatoes you normally get served under this name), the Shrimp Cocktail (huge, gigantic shrimp with delicious homemade cocktail sauce), Chicken Piccata (very yummy, but please beware: when they say butter sauce they mean business, it was so rich with every bite I could positively feel my arteries shriveling up in terrified protest) or Mediterranean Style Salmon (a perfectly grilled piece of salmon in a very flavorful seafood sauce). I tried I few bites from my companion’s plate now and then and can attest with clear conscience that their pizzas and pastas are of the most pleasing quality. If you are a wine lover then you will probably be quite happy with Mezzo’s list, which contains a good variety of wines from all different continents. The service is really good too, friendly and efficient without being overbearing. The waiters are simply themselves:  they don’t try to be fakely upbeat to the point where you fear that so much false cheerfulness and exaggerated concern for your well-being (mostly asking you every 5 minutes if you want anything else, interrupting any kind of communication you are attempting with your dinner companion) can cause permanent damage to the person’s face. Mezzo can be described as a truly a great find and it must be noted that it offers excellent value for money: both the food and the wine are very reasonably priced. Especially considering that this is definitely a classy place and not your neighborhood inexpensive bistro. If you sign up for their newsletter you will receive notifications about special promotions, events and live entertainment going on in the restaurant. I have been there several times already and will most certainly return! Highly recommended.
